Just a day after the new iPhone Software 2.2 has been released, the guys at the iPhone DevTeam have managed to crack it, and QuickPwn 2.2 has been released for Mac and Windows.
As well as the release of Quickpwn 2.2 for Mac and Windows, they have also released Pwnage 2.2 for Mac.
- GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
- Read item 1 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
- These are suitable for the recent 2.2 release.
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- The ‘late 2008’ MacBook/air/pro line of computers have an issue with DFU mode. While it’s possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> Pwned 2.2 (using PwnageTool), you can’t yet go from stock to pwned. If in any doubt use a different machine.
- Choosing the correct tool is crucial. Be warned!

Google launches a voice search iPhone App
Google has created an iPhone App, that will let you search via voice on the iPhone.
The application will be free, and users of the iPhone App will be able to talk into the iPhone mic and ask it questions, for example ‘Where is the nearest Apple store?’, the information is then sent down the iPhone and translated by Google’s servers.
Within seconds, the search results will be displayed on your iPhone, and you will also receive localised search results which will be determined by the location features built into the iPhone.
The App is expected to be available from the iPhone App store today, it will be interesting to see how well it works, it certainly sounds very impressive.

AT&T will charge iPhone users for tethering & cap data usage
It looks like AT&T are going to charge iPhone users to tether their iPhone to their PC or Mac, and it will cost around $30 per month and there will be a cap on the data of 5GB per month.
The reason we haven’t heard or seen anything about it, is because AT&T is being extremely paranoid of how the service will run on their network. “Since I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen them be so worried about legalities,” my colleague explained. Regarding the service being available to Blackberry users, he says that it’s a different situation. Blackberry users haven’t slammed AT&T’s network by the millions in one quarter, in such large rushes. “Regardless of how many billions of dollars AT&T pours into their 3G network, it hasn’t been stable enough to handle all you iPhone users,” he explained.
Here’s some details of the potential tethering plan.
- 5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) – AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).
- Initial connection through iTunes? (not sure if this is every time you connect, or just for initial setup)
- Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k – dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k – ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k – slow broadband.
- You’ll want to disable auto-updates for everything, so as to not go over usage limitations.
- Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in.
- Do not pro-rate tethering/bandwidth, it can become a nightmare, instead wait until new billing cycle.
- For unlimited bandwidth, AT&T will tell you to get a wireless PC card.
- No idea on a launch date.
